You started taking magnesium to sleep better, and now the night is still bad while the morning has become heavy. Daytime sleepiness is not proof that sleep has improved. The available literature also does not treat it as a sign that the supplement is correcting a sleep problem. The Effect Showed Up. But Was That the Effect You Wanted? You wanted to fall asleep more easily, wake up less, or reach the morning feeling different. If none of that changed, feeling groggy at ten does not answer the original question. A capsule sold to help with sleep makes you sleepy; it feels like confirmation that “something happened.” Something happening is not the same as the problem being solved.
Studies Do Not Measure Success by How Knocked Out Someone Feels
The NCCIH says there is still little high-quality research on magnesium for sleep disorders, with conflicting results. Some observational literature includes associations with daytime sleepiness; that does not turn sleepiness into a marker of improvement. In 2025, a randomized trial of 155 adults reporting poor sleep found a slightly greater improvement in insomnia severity with magnesium bisglycinate. The effect was small.
The measure was insomnia severity. Not “how sleepy the person felt during the day.”
A noticeable effect gets attention. It does not automatically earn the name benefit.
Grogginess Exists as a Report. That Does Not Settle Its Cause
Reports of heavy mornings, sleepiness, and difficulty functioning appear repeatedly in online communities. They show that the question exists. They do not measure frequency or explain mechanism. Timing, dose, formulation, GABA, individual sensitivity: explanations appear quickly. The evidence does not move at the same speed. Lethargy also appears in references on magnesium toxicity at very high exposures. Using that context to automatically explain everyday sluggishness from a typical supplement would be a leap. Grogginess is the report. The cause remains open.

Feeling Sleepier Is Not a Medal for Effectiveness
If the night did not improve and the day got heavier, what exactly improved?
